Can You Still Travel Without a REAL ID in 2025? Check this Blog to find out!

By Take the Trip by Brian

If you’ve been putting off getting your REAL ID, you’re not alone—and you’re not out of luck yet, either. As of May 7, 2025, the long-anticipated REAL ID enforcement date is here, and many travelers are wondering: Can I still fly without a REAL ID?

Here’s what you need to know before you head to the airport.

What Is a REAL ID, Anyway?

The REAL ID is a federally approved form of identification designed to enhance security and reduce fraud. You’ll know your license is REAL ID–compliant if it has a gold star in the top right corner. It’s required by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for boarding domestic flights and entering certain federal facilities.

Can You Fly Without a REAL ID?

Yes—but only if you have another acceptable form of ID.

Starting May 7, 2025, a standard state driver’s license without the gold star will no longer be accepted to board domestic flights. But that doesn’t mean you’re grounded.

You can still fly within the U.S. if you bring one of the following alternatives:

A valid U.S. passport A passport card A Department of Defense ID A permanent resident card (green card) A trusted traveler card (like Global Entry or NEXUS) Other TSA-approved identification (full list available on the TSA website)

So… Do You Need a REAL ID?

You don’t need it—if you have a passport or another valid ID.

But if you’re someone who doesn’t have a passport, and you plan to fly domestically, it’s smart to get your REAL ID to avoid hassles or denied boarding.

How to Get Your REAL ID

To get a REAL ID–compliant license or ID card, visit your local DMV and bring:

Proof of identity (like a birth certificate or passport) Proof of Social Security number (like a Social Security card or W-2) Two proofs of Ohio residency (utility bills, lease, etc.)

Each state may vary slightly, so check your state BMV or DMV website for exact requirements.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Let Paperwork Ground Your Adventures

Whether you’re flying to Cleveland, cruising to Cincinnati, or jetting out to your next national park adventure, don’t let an ID issue delay your trip. A passport or REAL ID is your ticket to stress-free skies.

So if you haven’t made the upgrade yet, now’s the time to take care of it—before your next Take the Trip moment arrives.
