Chef’s Take: Cruise Buffet Do’s and Don’ts

As a former chef turned travel blogger. I spill the secrets to eating well at sea

Ah, the cruise buffet — a floating world of endless options. As a former chef who traded in the chef’s coat for cruise wear, I have seen the good, the bad, and the “should have skipped that shrimp” moments.

Whether you’re sailing for the first time or a seasoned cruiser, here is my list of Cruise Buffet Do’s and Don’ts so you can eat smart, safe, and satisfied.

DO: Walk the Buffet First

Before you grab a plate, take a lap. Get the lay of the land. That way, you do not load up on filler food and miss the good stuff (like the carving station or freshly grilled fish).

DON’T: Build a Food Tower

One word: moderation. Avoid the mile-high plate. It slows the line down and makes you look like it is your last meal. Cruise buffets are all-you-can-eat… not all-you-can-stack.

DO: Be Adventurous

Buffets are the perfect time to try something new. Never had Thai curry? Curious about jerk chicken? Give it a shot! You might discover a new favorite dish without committing to a full order.

DON’T: Skip the Fresh Stations

Anything made to order — omelets, stir-fry, carved meats — is your best bet for flavor and food safety. Heat lamp food gets old fast.

DO: Eat at Off-Peak Times

Avoid the rush by hitting breakfast early or lunch a bit late. You will dodge long lines and get fresher food.

❌ DON’T: Forget Buffet Etiquette

Please…

Use the utensils provided Do not hover or reach across other people’s Plate. Avoid touching food with your hands and never, ever, double dip

DO: Check the Daily Specials

Cruise buffets often change daily. Look out for theme nights or specific features like “Seafood Night” or “Taste of the Caribbean.” Variety is part of the fun!

DON’T: Fill Up on Bread (Unless It is Exceptional)

Bread is a classic filler. Only go for it if it is fresh, hot, and worth it. Otherwise, save space for the showstoppers.

DO: Appreciate the Crew

The staff behind the buffet work hard to keep everything clean, stocked, and safe. A simple “thank you” goes a long way — and if someone really shines, let their supervisor know!

🍳 Bonus Tip from the Chef:

At breakfast, head to the omelet station for a custom-made Omelet or Eggs cooked to order. Pair it with bacon and fruit for a perfectly balanced cruise morning meal.

Final Thoughts:

Cruise buffets are more than just meals — they are part of the adventure. With a little planning and a dash of etiquette, you can make every bite count.

Bon appétit and bon voyage, until next Time remember,

Take the Trip!! – Brian
