1. A Knightly Adventure: Visiting Loveland Castle in Ohio

Blog for Take the Trip by Brian

If you are a fan of castles, medieval history, or just quirky roadside attractions, then boy, do I have the perfect Ohio adventure for you? Just northeast of Cincinnati, nestled along the banks of the Little Miami River, sits Château Laroche—but locals and road-trippers alike know it best as Loveland Castle.

Yep, a real castle. In Ohio. Built by hand.

🏰 Built by One Man with a Dream (and a Lot of Bricks)

Loveland Castle is not just cool to look at, it is a testament to one man’s unbelievable dedication. Sir Harry Andrews, a WWI vet and medieval enthusiast, started building the castle in 1929… and did not stop for over 50 years. Using stones from the river and homemade bricks (yes, homemade bricks!), he recreated a medieval-style fortress complete with towers, turrets, a dungeon, and even a knight’s hall.

And no, this is not some Disney-fied tourist trap. This is the real deal. Stone walls. Gothic arches. Armor. Swords. A garden fit for royalty. The place is equal parts storybook and spooky.

đź‘‘ Touring the Castle

We stepped into the castle and instantly felt transported. Inside, you will find winding staircases, medieval weapons, stained glass, and relics from Sir Harry’s time in Europe and the war. There is also an impressive collection of medieval history books and displays about knighthoods and chivalry.

Outside, the grounds are serene and lush, with plenty of places to sit, take photos, and let your imagination wander. We were practically expecting a knight to come riding up on horseback.

One of the coolest parts? The Knights of the Golden Trail, the group Harry founded, still maintains the castle today. They are real people keeping the legacy alive dressed in chainmail and all.

Loveland Castle is one of those hidden Ohio gems that makes you stop and say, “Wait, what? There is a castle here?” But it is more than just a fun stop, it’s a symbol of passion, persistence, and the magic of chasing a dream.

Sir Harry did not just build a castle. He built a legacy.

And now it is your turn to take the trip.
