“Packing Smart for an Alaskan Cruise: Must-Haves & What to Skip, what my research has taught me”

By: Brian from Take the Trip

I am taking my very first Alaskan cruise next year and let me tell you—I have been diving deep into research. From seasoned cruisers to local Alaskans, I have gathered all the packing wisdom I could find to make sure I am ready for the adventure of a lifetime.

This guide is not from a cruise pro yet, but it is built from the best tips, real experiences, and a whole lot of excitement. So, if you are heading to Alaska like me, here is what to pack—and what to leave at home.

✅ MUST-HAVES

🧥 Layers, Layers, Layers

The weather changes quickly in Alaska—even in summer. One minute it’s sunny and 65°F, the next you are caught in a chilly drizzle.

Base layer: Moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirts Middle layer: Fleece or sweater for warmth Outer layer: Waterproof, windproof jacket (hooded is best)

👖 Comfortable Pants

Jeans or hiking pants are perfect for excursions. Avoid shorts unless you run hot; even in July it is cool on the water.

👟 Waterproof Footwear

Whether you are walking on a glacier, exploring Ketchikan, or just facing wet sidewalks, waterproof shoes or boots are key.

🧢 Hats, Gloves, and Scarves

It can be surprisingly cold, especially near glaciers or on open decks. Pack:

Warm hat or beanie Light gloves (consider touchscreen ones for photos) Buff or scarf for wind protection.

🌧️ Compact Umbrella or Rain Poncho

Alaska’s weather can turn wet quickly. Pack something light and easy to carry.

🕶️ Sunglasses & Sunscreen

You might not expect it, but the sun reflects off the water and ice like crazy. Do not forget to protect your eyes and skin.

📸 Binoculars & Camera

Spotting whales, bald eagles, or bears is part of the thrill. A good zoom lens or compact binoculars can make a big difference.

🎒 Daypack

For excursions, pack a small backpack to hold water, snacks, extra layers, and your camera gear.

⚓ Cruise Casuals

Dinner on the ship can be casual or upscale. Bring:

A couple of “nicer” outfits for dinner (button-down or blouse, slacks, or a dress) Comfortable cruise lounge wear for sea days

🚫 DON’T BOTHER

👙 Swimsuits (Maybe Just One)

Most cruise ships have hot tubs, but you will not be sunbathing. Bring one if you are into hot tubbing; otherwise skip it.

👠 High Heels or Fancy Shoes

Save the suitcase space. Between the movement of the ship and the rugged ports, comfort wins.

🏖️ Beach Towels

Your ship will provide them—and you likely will not use them off the ship anyway.

🧴 Too Many Toiletries

Unless you need specific brands, the cruise ship will have the basics. Travel-sized everything is the way to go.

🧳 Heavy Suitcases

Alaska is not the place to overpack. You will regret lugging around an extra 20 pounds. Focus on re-wearable layers.

📚 A Stack of Books

Bring one or download them to a Kindle or tablet. You will be out and about exploring or watching the scenery—less time than you think to read!

Bonus Tip: Pack for Port Adventures

If you have booked a dog sledding, kayaking, or glacier hike excursion—check if they provide gear like boots or parkas. Some do, which saves space!

While this packing list is based on research and advice from experienced cruisers, I will be putting it all to the test on my Alaskan cruise next year—and I will be sure to report back with what worked (and what did not)!
