Sourdough Stories and Smiles at Maker Baker -Findlay Market, Cincinnati

By Brian | Take the Trip – Your Next Adventure is Waiting

There is something magical about walking into a place that immediately feels like home… even if that home smells like warm sourdough and fresh cinnamon rolls (which, let us be honest, is the dream). That is exactly how we felt when we stepped up to Maker Baker, nestled inside the bustling Findlay Market in Cincinnati’s charming Over-the-Rhine neighborhood.

Our visit started like any other – strolling through the market, soaking in the sights, sounds, and smells – when that heavenly scent of freshly baked bread practically pulled us in by the nose. We ended up grabbing a loaf of golden-brown sourdough that was so light and fluffy, it practically bounced when we picked it up.

As I admired the bread, I had the pleasure of meeting Kevin, the manager and storyteller-in-chief of Maker Baker. And let me tell you – this guy is passionate. He told me their sourdough starts with a starter named Vivian.

Yes. Vivian.

They named their starter. Like a beloved grandma who passed down her baking secrets. I smiled so hard I nearly dropped the loaf. Anyone who treats their dough starter like family is bound to be baking up something special.

Kevin shared that Maker Baker got its start in a tent right outside the market, and thanks to their loyal customers (and clearly, Vivian’s charm), they now have a cozy little home inside Findlay Market. As Kevin put it, they have become a part of the heartbeat of this historic market – and it’s easy to see why.

Then, with a glimmer in his eye, he asked, “Have you tried our Almost Famous Banana Pudding?”

Spoiler: I had not. But a little post-visit digging confirmed it is the kind of dessert people write love letters to. So, guess who is going back?

Kevin also raved about their homemade cinnamon rolls, which they ice to order – because why not live your best life? They are so good, they inspired a collab with Samuel Adams to create a Cinnamon Roll Breakfast Bock. Yep – cinnamon roll beer. You can even snag it right at the stand. Cheers to sweet innovation!

As we wrapped up our chat, Kevin tossed out a great lunch suggestion at a nearby BBQ joint. And just like that, we felt like we had made a new friend – the kind who sends you off full of good bread and good vibes.

For me, it is never about the food. It is the story behind it. The people. The journey. And tonight, when we slice into that beautiful loaf of sourdough, we will not just taste the bread. We will taste history, heart, and a little bit of Vivian.

Take the Trip. Your Next Adventure (and maybe your next cinnamon roll) is waiting.
