10 Hotel Hacks I Wish I Knew Sooner

July 26, 2025

There is something exciting about checking into a hotel—fresh sheets, tiny soaps, and pretending you are fancy for a night. But let us be real: not all hotel stays are created equal. Over time (and many check-ins later), I have picked up a few hacks that make hotel life easier, cheaper, and way more comfortable.

Here are 10 hotel hacks I wish I knew sooner—so you do not have to learn the hard way like I did.

🧼 1. Use the Shower Cap to Cover Your Shoes

Let us start with weird but practical. Do not want your dirty shoes touching your clean clothes? Grab the free shower cap and wrap them up. Instant shoe bag. Bonus: doubles as a makeshift bowl cover if you are the room-snacking type.

🛏️ 2. Tame the Light Show with a Hanger Clip

Hotels love blue glowing clocks, blinking smoke detectors, and curtains that almost close. Use the pants clip from the closet hanger to pinch the curtain gap shut. Voilà—total darkness without duct tape.

💡 3. Use a Power Strip or Portable Charger

Outlets are always in weird places. Bring a small power strip or a charger with multiple USB ports. One outlet = all your devices powered, including your friend’s 3 dead phones.

🍽️ 4. Turn the Coffee Maker into a Hot Water Machine

Not a fan of hotel coffee? (You are not alone.) Run water through the in-room coffee maker without coffee, and now you have got hot water for oatmeal, ramen, tea, or your fancy pour-over setup.

🧊 5. Use the Ice Bucket as a Mini Fridge

Need to chill drinks or leftovers but no fridge in sight? Fill the ice bucket, wrap your items in a plastic bag, and pop them in. It is not elegant, but it gets the job done.

🚿 6. Steam Out Wrinkles While You Shower

No iron? Hang your clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower. The steam works wonders on wrinkled clothes—and your soul. (Do not forget to bring wrinkle-release spray too. It’s a game changer.)

🥪 7. Make a Breakfast Sandwich… Your Way

Hotel breakfast spreads often have all the fixings—eggs, bread, cheese, meat. BYO condiment packets (mayo, hot sauce, mustard), assemble your own sandwich, and save $10 on brunch. Pro tip: stash a few in your bag for later.

🔒 8. Use a Towel or Door Wedge for Extra Security

For peace of mind, roll up a towel and place it at the base of the door—or use a portable door lock or wedge. It will not stop everything, but it adds an extra layer when you are in unfamiliar places.

📱 9. Take Photos of the Room When You Arrive

Snap pics of the room as soon as you walk in. That way, if something is wrong—or they try to charge you for damage—you have got proof. Same goes for the minibar (take pics of what is in there to avoid surprise charges).

🛎️ 10. Ask—Because Upgrades and Perks Are Often Free

Want a better view, late checkout, or free bottled water? Just ask. Being friendly at check-in goes a long way. If the hotel’s not full, they might toss in an upgrade or perk. Worst they can say is no—but you would be surprised how often it is a yes.

🏨 Hotel Life, Upgraded

Hotels can be hit-or-miss, but with a few clever tricks, you can turn even the most basic stay into something smoother, cleaner, and a whole lot smarter. And hey—if nothing else, you’ve got clean shoes and a DIY breakfast sandwich. That is a win.

Take the Trip

Because travel should be memorable—for the right reasons.

How to Check for Bed Bugs in a Hotel Room

      1. Don’t Put Luggage on the Bed or Floor
      • Place bags on a luggage rack (away from walls), in the bathtub, or on a hard surface table while you inspect.
      • Bed bugs love soft surfaces and crevices—avoid giving them a ride home.

      2. Inspect the Bed First
      • Pull back the sheets and check the mattress seams, especially the corners.
      • Look for:
      • Small rust-colored stains or dots (bed bug feces or crushed bugs)
      • Tiny white eggs or shed skins
      • Live bugs (they’re reddish-brown and apple seed-sized)

      3. Check the Headboard
      • Many hotels don’t move these often, so bed bugs hide there.
      • Use your phone flashlight to inspect behind and around the headboard.

      4. Inspect the Box Spring
      • Lift the mattress and inspect the edges and seams of the box spring.
      • Pay attention to the piping and stapled areas.

      5. Look Around Nearby Furniture
      • Check nightstands, drawers, and upholstered chairs.
      • Inspect between cushions, around zippers, and in cracks of wooden furniture.

      6. Look Behind Wall Hangings & Curtains
      • Bed bugs can hide behind picture frames and curtain pleats.

      Signs of Bed Bugs
      • Tiny black specks (poop)
      • Blood stains on sheets
      • Molted skins or eggs
      • Musty, sweet odor (in heavy infestations)

🧳 Bonus Tip: Protect Your Luggage
      • Keep your suitcase zipped and elevated.
      • Consider using plastic trash bags or travel bed bug covers.
      • When you get home: Unpack in the garage or laundry room, and dry clothes on high heat.
