When you think of great travel destinations, you probably picture beaches, mountains, or maybe even big-city skylines. But sometimes the best part of traveling is finding the local spots where everyone in town shops, eats, and gathers.
In Dayton, Ohio, that place is Dorothy Lane Market—or as locals call it, just “DLM.”

Walking Into Heaven (Literally) ☕🥐

We visited the Oakwood location today and parked around back. Pro tip: if you enter through the rear doors, you step directly into what I can only describe as Heaven’s waiting room—a bakery and coffee shop that looks like it was pulled straight from a gourmet magazine.

Rows of breads, rolls, and bagels looked picture perfect. The dessert case? Forget about it. How can one mere mortal choose from such an incredible selection? Everything here is baked from scratch at their sister store a few miles away.
We ultimately made our choices:
A Killer Brownie® with sea salt and caramel (yes, trademarked and shipped all over the country for a reason). A croissant-like pastry glazed with honey—light, flaky, and gone in 60 seconds. Laura’s Cookies—a sugar cookie meets almond cookie, soft and delicious. And finally, a loaf of their Farmhouse Bread, perfect for sandwiches later.
And folks… that was all within steps of the entrance.
A Deli & Dinner Counter Like No Other 🥗🥪🍲

Wandering further, we discovered a deli that seemed endless. From house-made salads to prepped meals (perfect for anyone who doesn’t cook or just needs something quick), this counter is packed.
At the very end, you can order freshly made sandwiches and soups. My wife went with a Turkey Sausalito sandwich on sourdough and paired it with creamy Tomato Bisque soup. I snuck a bite—rich, velvety, and just the right hint of sweetness.

The Butcher Secret You Need to Know 🍔

Now, here’s where Dorothy lLane Market really sets itself apart. Head to the butcher counter, pick out your burger (or steak, or seafood), and they’ll grill it for you right there. No extra charge.
I went with the Palmer Burger, a blend of brisket and short rib with shredded mozzarella mixed in. Grilled perfectly medium-rare, served on a house-made bun, and topped with sautéed onions, mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and pickle. This wasn’t just a grocery store burger—it was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had.
I chatted with Jennifer, the butcher/seafood manager, who explained they source locally whenever possible, and grind their burgers fresh daily. That kind of care and attention shows in every bite.
More Than Just a Market 🌎🧀🌿
Beyond the bakery, deli, and butcher, DLM also offers:

A massive salad bar with fresh fruits, veggies, and cheeses. An international cheese section that feels like a world tour. A wine and beer collection worthy of its own shop. Friendly staff who make the whole experience warm and welcoming.
It’s no wonder Dorothy Lane Market has grown from a small fruit stand in 1948 into a Dayton icon. They’ve managed to blend gourmet flair with neighborhood hospitality—and the result is a grocery store that’s more of a foodie adventure.
Why You Should Go
If you’re traveling through Dayton, Dorothy Lane Market should absolutely be on your list. Stop in for a Killer Brownie, try one of their fresh-grilled burgers, wander the aisles of specialty foods, and soak up the community vibe.
This isn’t just grocery shopping—it’s an experience.
Until next time, I’m Brian — and remember to Take the Trip!
(And in this case, take the burger and the brownie. You’ll thank me later. 🍔🍫)
