So, you have booked a cruise — congrats! The ocean breeze, endless buffets, and exotic ports of call are waiting for you. But before you sail away into paradise, you have got one crucial mission: packing smart. A cruise is not like a road trip or a weekend getaway where you can just toss extra stuff in the car. Once you are onboard, you are limited to what you have brought — so packing the right things (and leaving behind the wrong ones) can make or break your trip.
Here is my “Pack This, Not That” guide for smooth sailing:
✅ Pack This: A Power Strip (Cruise-Approved)
Outlets in cruise cabins are few and far between — and everyone’s got devices to charge. A cruise-approved power strip or USB hub is a lifesaver.
❌ Not That: A surge protector. Cruise ships ban them. Security will take it, and you will be left fighting your roommate over the only available outlet.
✅ Pack This: Motion Sickness Remedies
Even if you are not usually prone to seasickness, rough waters can surprise anyone. Sea-Bands, Dramamine, or ginger candies are your best friends.
❌ Not That: “I’ll be fine.” Trust me, when that boat starts rocking, you do not want to discover you are not.
✅ Pack This: A Refillable Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is key, and most ships have drink stations where you can fill up. Plus, it saves money at port stops.
❌ Not That: A case of bottled water. Many cruise lines do not let you bring it onboard and lugging it through security is a hassle anyway.
✅ Pack This: Comfortable Walking Shoes
Between shore excursions and just exploring the ship, you’ll walk more than you think. Pack shoes you can actually walk in.
❌ Not That: Only flip-flops. Great for the pool deck, terrible when you are climbing Cobblestone streets in port.
✅ Pack This: A Light Jacket or Sweater
Even tropical cruises can get breezy at night or chilly inside with all that AC.
❌ Not That: Just swimsuits and tank tops. You will regret it when you are shivering at a deck party under the stars.
✅ Pack This: A Small Day Bag
Perfect for carrying sunscreen, camera, snacks, and souvenirs when you are off the ship.
❌ Not That: Giant suitcases for shore excursions. You will look like you are moving in, not touring.
✅ Pack This: Luggage Tags (Sturdy Ones)
Cruise lines often send printable tags. Reinforce them with holders so your bag does not get lost.
❌ Not That: Hoping the paper tag survives baggage handlers. It will not.
✅ Pack This: Patience and a Sense of Humor
Lines happen. Elevators get crowded. The Wi-Fi is not always great. But if you can roll with it, you’ll have an amazing trip.
❌ Not That: A bad attitude. Do not be “that cruiser.”
Final Thought
Cruising is about enjoying the journey as much as the destination. Pack smart, travel light, and you will spend less time stressing and more time sipping piña coladas by the pool.
Until next time, I am Brian — and remember to Take the Trip!

(And no, you really do not need to bring 14 pairs of shoes… unless you are planning a fashion show at sea.)
