By Brian – Take the Trip, your Next Adventure is waiting (if you dare 👻)

If you are the kind of person who laughs in the face of fear, jumps at jump-scares, or just enjoys voluntarily peeing your pants for fun — then this list is for you. America is home to some of the most terrifying, scream-inducing, nightmare-fueling haunted houses you will ever crawl, run, or cry your way through.
These are not your local high school hayrides. These are full-contact, heart-racing horror shows designed to mess with your head. So, grab your bravest friends, leave your pride at the door, and get ready to scream like your life depends on it (because at some of these… it just might feel like it does).
1. McKamey Manor – Summertown, TN / Huntsville, AL
Warning: This one is not for the faint of heart. Or, honestly, for most people.
McKamey Manor is notorious for its extreme, psychological horror. You have to sign a 40-page waiver, get a doctor’s note, pass a background check, and undergo a drug test just to enter. Oh — and it can last up to 8 HOURS. Think of fear factor meets psychological torment.
Scare Level: 15/10
Not recommended unless you are a part horror fan, part masochist.
2. Netherworld – Atlanta, GA
Now THIS is how you do haunted houses. Netherworld is a massive, movie-quality production with monsters, aliens, zombies, and every creature you have ever seen in a nightmare. The set design is unreal, the costumes are straight out of a Hollywood horror film, and the energy is pure chaos in the best way.
Scare Level: 9/10
Feels like walking through a live horror movie.
3. Pennhurst Asylum – Spring City, PA
Haunted house inside a real, abandoned mental asylum? Say less.
Pennhurst Asylum blends haunted attraction thrills with actual haunted history. Once a controversial institution, this place is loaded with creepy vibes, chilling stories, and interactive actors who know how to get in your head.
Scare Level: 10/10
Bonus: They also offer real ghost hunts. No refunds if you leave with a spirit.
4. The 13th Gate – Baton Rouge, LA
Louisiana already has spooky history, and the 13th Gate takes it next level. With 13 unique “gates” (aka fear zones), you will crawl through tombs, run from clowns, and dodge swamp monsters. The realism is insane — they even have a real snake room. Nope.
Scare Level: 9.5/10
If you have a thing about snakes… stay outta Gate #4.
5. The Dent Schoolhouse – Cincinnati, OH
Set in a former schoolhouse with a terrifying backstory (involving a murderous janitor, of course), Dent mixes hometown horror with top-notch effects. This one has atmosphere, story, and seriously creepy visuals that will haunt your dreams.
Scare Level: 8.5/10
Come for the history, stay because you are too scared to move.
6. House of Torment – Austin, TX
Multiple themed attractions, terrifyingly talented actors, and next-level visuals make this a must-do for horror fans in Texas. With names like “The Possession” and “Return to Illusion Manor,” you know you are in for it.
Scare Level: 9/10
Also, Austin is cool — if you survive, go grab tacos.
7. Haunted Overload – Lee, NH
Set in the woods of New England, Haunted Overload is what happens when Halloween meets a gothic nightmare. Think 30-foot monsters, fire effects, and towering creatures in the trees. It is theatrical, eerie, and flat-out terrifying.
Scare Level: 8/10
Great if you are scared of the woods… and being chased through them.
Final Thoughts: Do It for the Scream
Haunted houses are not just about the scares — they are about living the story, laughing through fear, and finding out who in your friend group screams like a toddler (spoiler: it might be you). Whether you are into blood and guts, psychological horror, or good old-fashioned ghost stories, America has a haunted house that will mess you up just right.
So, bring your bravery, leave your logic behind, and…
Take the Trip — your Next (terrifying) Adventure is waiting.
