One of my favorite parts of a road trip isn’t the destination — it’s the food you discover along the way. Not the places you plan weeks in advance, but the spots you pull into because you’re hungry, curious, or someone told you, “Trust me.”
Over the years, a lot of meals have come and gone. But a few stops stay with you long after the miles are behind you. These are the ones that become part of the trip’s story.
Here are the top three best food stops I’ve found on road trips — the kind of places that make you want to take the long way next time.
3. the Southern Diner — Saugatuck Mi

Saugatuck has no shortage of great food, but the Southern Diner hits differently. This is the kind of place that feels welcoming the moment you walk in — relaxed, unpretentious, and exactly what you want when you’re road-weary and hungry.
The menu is classic comfort food done right. The Fried Chicken hits the spot, portions are generous, and so, delicious and everything feels like it was made with care. It’s the kind of stop that slows you down in the best way and reminds you why diners are such an important part of American road-trip culture.
When you’re Traveling through Saugatuck Michigan and need a meal that feels like a reset, the Southern Diner delivers every time.
2. Scooter’s World-Famous Hot Dog Haus — Mentor, Ohio

If you’ve ever thought, “It’s just a hot dog,” Scooter’s is here to change your mind.
Scooter’s World Famous Hot Dog Haus is pure road-trip gold. No frills, no gimmicks — just seriously good hot dogs done with confidence and personality. The dogs are loaded, the flavors pop, and every bite reminds you that simple food done right is hard to beat.
This is the kind of stop you tell people about when they ask where to eat in Ohio. You don’t stumble into Scooter’s by accident — you go there because you know, and once you’ve been, you always know.
1. The Farmer, The Butcher, The Chef — Austinburg, Ohio

Some places aren’t just food stops — they’re experiences. The Farmer, The Butcher, The Chef, located in Austinburg, Ohio, is one of those places.
Let me be clear: this was hands down the best steak I have ever had. Not “one of the best.” Not “top five.” The best. Perfectly cooked, incredibly tender, and packed with flavor that you don’t forget once the plate is cleared.
This is food that tells a story. You can taste the care, the sourcing, and the pride in every bite. Nothing feels rushed or ordinary here. This is a place where you slow down, take your time, and truly appreciate the meal in front of you.
On a road trip, food like this completely break the routine. They remind you that unforgettable food doesn’t only exist in big cities — sometimes it’s waiting for you in a small town you didn’t expect to love.
This one earns the top spot not just because it was great — but because it set a new standard.
I’m genuinely sad to share this, but it appears The Farmer, The Butcher, The Chef… has changed hands and moved to a new location. Based on recent reviews, the food and overall experience no longer reflect what this place once was.
That’s a tough thing to write, because this restaurant gave me the best steak I’ve ever eaten—one of those meals you still think about years later. It wasn’t just dinner; it was an experience. The care, the craft, the connection between the farm and the plate… it all mattered.
If you were lucky enough to eat there in its prime, you know exactly what I mean. I’ll always be grateful I got to experience it when everything was firing on all cylinders. Sadly, it sounds like that chapter has closed.
Some meals you don’t forget—and this was one of them.
Why These food experiences Matter
Road-trip food isn’t about perfection. It’s about moments. These are the places where you refuel, laugh, recap the drive, and accidentally create memories that stick with you long after the trip ends.
These three stops earned their place because they weren’t just meals — they were part of the journey.
