Take The Trip by Brian

Travel planning can feel a lot like juggling flaming coconuts while riding a unicycle—exciting, a little chaotic, and one wrong move away from disaster. And trust me, I’ve had my share of “What do you mean the hotel is in the wrong city?” moments. But after enough adventures on land and at sea, I’ve developed a process that helps me plan a vacation without losing my sanity (or my socks, which I still somehow never pack enough of).
So if you’re ready to take your next trip but the logistics feel overwhelming, pull up a chair. Here’s my personal step-by-step method for planning a trip like a pro—while still leaving room for those unexpected, unforgettable travel moments.
Step 1: Start With the Why
Before I book a single thing, I ask myself a simple question:
What do I want from this trip?
Is it relaxation? Adventure? Food? Family time? A little of everything? Knowing the intention helps shape the whole plan.
For example, on my Margaritaville at Sea cruise, I wanted saltwater, sunshine, and a break from life’s hustle, and that guided every decision from excursions to dinner plans.
Step 2: Research… but Make It Fun, Vacation shouldn’t feel like work!
I used to research vacations like I was preparing for a Supreme Court trial. Now, I do it differently:
My favorite sources:
YouTube: Real travelers, real stories, real food reviews. Travel blogs & forums: Best-kept secrets from fellow explorers. Social media groups: Locals and repeat travelers can save you from tourist traps. Official websites: For the actual rules, hours, and requirements (because rumors on Facebook are not facts).
I collect ideas, not a rigid schedule. I want inspiration, not pressure.
🗓 Step 3: Build a Flexible Itinerary
Yes, I plan. No, I do not plan every second. I’m not running a military operation; I’m taking a vacation.
I choose one main activity per day and keep the rest open. That way I have structure, but if I wake up tired or the weather changes? I can pivot.
Step 4: Booking Smart (This Saves Money & Headaches)
Here’s how I keep it simple:
Flights
✔ Use flexible date searches
✔ Compare airports if possible
✔ Book nonstop when you can—layovers are chaos disguised as travel
Hotels / Cruises / Stays
Look at recent reviews (not ones from 2017 when the wallpaper was a different color)
Check location on a map—not just “near the beach,” but how near
Know cancellation policies—life happens
Read reviews but not just the good or bad ones, read them all and make an informed choice.
Excursions / Activities
✔ Book must-do items early
✔ Leave some experiences unbooked for spontaneity
Step 5: Packing With Purpose
Here’s my rule: Outfits by day, or Theme.
Essentials I always recommend:
A small Rechargable fan
A portable charger
Comfortable shoes
Copies of travel documents
Snacks (no explanation needed)
Step 6: Leave Room for Magic
Some of my best memories have come from unplanned moments:
Meeting my long-lost cousin on a cruise
playing with monkeys in Roatán
Dancing like no one was watching (but everyone definitely was)
If you overschedule, you miss the chance to say yes to moments like that.
Final Thoughts: Your Trip Shouldn’t Feel Like a Chore
Travel planning doesn’t have to drain your energy or your excitement. With a mix of research, smart booking, and flexible structure, you can head into your adventure prepared—but not boxed in.
Because the truth is…
The best trips aren’t the ones that go exactly as planned. They’re the ones that remind you why you wanted to go in the first place.
Brian’s Tip
When planning your trip, don’t ask, “How do I fit everything in?”
Ask instead, “What do I want to remember when it’s over?”
Plan for those moments.
The rest will fall into place.
