Let me tell you about the day I took a bite out of fame — fried bologna fame, that is. Nestled in the tiny town of Waldo, Ohio (yes, it is real, and no, we did not lose him), sits a local legend: G & R Tavern Famous for their Fried Bologna Sandwiches greasy sides and huge pieces of pie, If you have never heard of it, allow me to enlighten you — and if you have, then you already know what kind of glorious, greasy magic I am talking about.
Now, I came for one reason: the iconic fried bologna sandwich. This is not your sad, thin, floppy lunchroom bologna — no sir. This is a thick-cut slab of love, griddled to golden perfection, with just enough char to let you know it means business. Slapped onto a soft bun with cheese and pickles, it is a blue-collar burger’s funky cousin — and I was here for it.
On the side? Beer-battered onion rings that crunched like a symphony and made me seriously consider writing them a love letter. They were crispy, golden, and dangerously addictive — I could have eaten a basket the size of Waldo.
My wife also had the bologna, but she chose fries. The fries were hot, crispy, and ready to be stolen out of her food boat — which, yes, I did.
Now, let us talk about the decor — because walking into G & R is like stepping into your great-Grandmas basement from1973. Think of wood paneling, lace curtains, neon beer signs, and maybe a deer head or two wondering how it all came to this. It is cozy, kitschy, and charming in that “we’re not trying to impress you, we’re just being ourselves” kind of way. And honestly? I loved it.
But fair warning to the modern folks: this place is proudly, unapologetically cash only. No credit cards, no Apple Pay, no crypto, no tapping your phone and hoping for the best. It is old-school — like Bologna. So come prepared with those greenbacks, or you might be washing dishes in the back next to someone’s Uncle Larry.
In a world of Instagrammable cafes and overpriced avocado toast, G & R Tavern is a refreshingly humble, meat-loving time machine. Come hungry, bring cash, and leave with a belly full of bologna and a heart full of small-town Ohio charm.
Until next time…
I am Brian, remember to Take the Trip — and take a bite out of your next adventure.
When it comes to family vacations, cruises can be a total game-changer. You unpack once, everything is included (mostly), and there is something for everyone—from toddlers to grandparents. But once you start planning, you are hit with the big question:
Carnival or Royal Caribbean?
I have sailed with both, and here’s the breakdown on which cruise line delivers the best family-friendly experience, based on real travel vibes—not just brochures.
🛳️ Vibe Check: Fun vs. Wow Factor
Carnival Cruise Line: Known as the “Fun Ships,” Carnival has a laid-back, casual vibe. Think of it like a floating family-friendly resort with pool parties, comedy shows, and a sprinkle of chaos—in the best way. Royal Caribbean: More polished and innovative. It feels like a floating city with futuristic technology, Broadway-style shows, and jaw-dropping attractions like indoor skydiving, surf simulators, and robot bartenders.
Winner for Wow Factor: Royal Caribbean
Winner for Easygoing Fun: Carnival
🧒 Kids & Teens: Who Does It Better?
Both lines offer free kids’ clubs, but the experiences are different.
Carnival: Camp Ocean (ages 2–11) is colorful, engaging, and themed around ocean animals. Circle C & Club O2 (for tweens and teens) include dance parties, movie nights, and social hangouts. Dr. Seuss at Sea: Parade, breakfast with The Cat in the Hat, and Seuss story time—huge hit with little ones. Royal Caribbean: Adventure Ocean: Broken into more specific age groups, with science experiments, theater games, and even escape rooms. Teens-only spaces are sleek and modern, like cool lounges. Babysitting options for toddlers (not offered on Carnival).
Winner for Kids’ Programming: Royal Caribbean
Winner for Character Fun: Carnival
🍔 Food for Families
Let us be honest, kids want pizza, ice cream, and chicken nuggets. Adults want at least one nice dinner. Both cruise lines get it.
Carnival: Guy’s Burger Joint, Blue Iguana Cantina, 24/7 soft serve. Family-style dining is casual and quick. More included, dining options without extra fees. Royal Caribbean: Johnny Rockets, Sorrento’s Pizza, and Windjammer buffet. Fancier specialty dining (some extra cost). More adventurous options for picky eaters and foodies alike.
Winner for Budget-Friendly Eats: Carnival
Winner for Dining Variety & Quality: Royal Caribbean
🎡 Attractions & Activities
Carnival: Waterworks water parks with slides and splash zones. Mini golf, ropes courses, and dive-in movies. Bolt: the first rollercoaster at sea (on select ships). Royal Caribbean: Flow Rider surf simulator, iFly skydiving, rock walls, zip lines, ice skating, and carousels (depending on ship). Huge kids’ splash areas and family pools. Virtual reality, laser tag, and escape rooms.
Winner for Thrill-Seeking Families: Royal Caribbean
Winner for Classic Cruise Fun: Carnival
💵 Budget & Value
Carnival is almost always cheaper up front. Royal Caribbean offers more ship features but can add up quickly with excursions, drink packages, and specialty dining.
Best for Budget-Conscious Families: Carnival
Best for Long-Term Value & Amenities: Royal Caribbean
Final Verdict: Which Cruise Line Is Best for Families?
Choose Carnival if:
You want a fun, no-stress, affordable vacation where the kids are entertained, the food is included, and the vibe is lively and casual.
Choose Royal Caribbean if:
You want a wow-worthy, action-packed ship with next-level amenities, polished programming for all ages, and you are okay spending a bit more for the experience.
🏆 Take the Trip by Brian’s Pick:
Royal Caribbean gets the edge for families looking for an all-ages adventure with a lot of “firsts” and unforgettable moments. But for families on a budget who want great value and laid-back fun, Carnival is still a top-tier pick.

Take the Trip, your Next Adventure is waiting.

picture is A.I generated. just a fun way to post a picture of me to tie in with the blog.
Some people spend their weekends scrolling. We prefer time traveling.
Today, my wife and I jumped in the Delorean and headed back in time to the golden age of chrome bumpers, neon lights, jukebox jams, and milkshakes thick enough to break a straw. We threw on our Best 50’s get up, at least in spirit (and in our minds, our poodle skirt and leather jacket) and cruised into Chole’s Diner in Massillon, Ohio—a place that doesn’t just serve food, it serves nostalgia on a silver platter.
From the moment you walk in, you’re transported back to a simpler time—surrounded by classic cars, bikes, and motorcycles parked right inside the place like it’s the set of Grease and Happy Days rolled into one. Neon signs blaze like it’s always Friday night after the stock hop.
The menu sticks to the diner classics—burgers, coneys, fries, and shakes—exactly what you’d expect when your taste buds want to twist and shout. I ordered Chole’s Famous Sliders—three little burgers with cheese and pickles. I swapped the fresh-cut fries for beer-battered onion rings because, well, I have standards (and cravings). The sliders were good—not going to win any James Beard awards—but they hit the retro spot.
My wife went full throttle with the Texas Burger, dripping in pepper jack cheese, BBQ sauce, and its own mini onion ring tower right on top. She braved the fresh-cut fries, which sadly were a little limp—like Elvis without the hip shake. Still, the flavor was there, and she gave that burger two thumbs up.
The service? was top-notch-friendly, attentive and perfectly in tune with the retro vibe. Our server made us feel right at home, striking the ideal balance between charm and efficiency.
Bottom line: Come for the atmosphere, soak in the nostalgic vibe, and enjoy some classic diner menu favorites. it’s a Fun stop if you are cruising through Massillon or just feel like spending some time into the rockin’ world of the 50’s and 60’s.
But wait—our retro ride didn’t end there. Keeping with the vintage vibe, we stopped for Ice Cream ok (frozen Custard) at Whit’s Frozen Custard on the way back, where we both got the seasonal peach-infused custard. Creamy, cool, and sweeter than a sock hop kiss—exactly what the summer doctor ordered.
And to bring our time-traveling day to an end, we went to the Goodguys Classic Car Show, which rolls into Columbus every July. With more classic cars than you shake a stick at. We walked the rows, wide-eyed like kids in a toy store, pointing out dream rides and agreeing once again: we were born in the wrong era.
She’s clearly a poodle skirt gal at heart, and I’ve got leather jacket energy and greaser hair in my soul. If this had been our time, we’d be dancing at the sock hop, sipping floats at the soda fountain, and making out at the drive-in under the stars.
But for one glorious day—we were there. And glad you came along for the ride!
Today is my brother’s birthday, and I am here to tell you about a trip I made — a trip born from love, loss, and a promise I made to Ronnie.
This was not a vacation or a sightseeing tour. It was something far deeper. A journey to fulfill a dream my brother never got to live out himself. A way to carry him somewhere was his body couldn’t go. This is the story of how I took Ronnie to New York City — not in person, but in spirit — and kept the promise I made before he passed.
Who Ronnie Was
Ronnie was my older brother. He was born with cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, but those words only explain a fraction of who he was. Ronnie was strong without ever raising his voice, kind without needing to be asked, and full of heart even when life tested his body.
He loved movies, music, and hearing stories about places he had never been. And there was one place he dreamed about more than anywhere else — New York City.
He would light up whenever someone mentioned it — fascinated by the energy, the lights, the people. He wanted to visit Central Park, walk (or be wheeled) through Times Square, and experience the buzz of the city that never sleeps. But due to his health, he never got the chance.
A Promise Made
Before he passed, I told Ronnie I loved him — and I meant it with everything I had. I told him that no matter what, I would get him to New York to live out that dream in some way.
But Ronnie passed away before we could go.
At his funeral, that promise still echoed in my heart. And I made a vow to myself — I would not let his dream die too. If he could not see New York in life, then a part of him would still make it there. I would carry him. I would bring him. I would keep my word.
Taking Ronnie to New York
I packed a small urn with Ronnie’s ashes and boarded a plane bound for NYC. It felt surreal walking the streets he had always imagined with, the noise, the people, the towering buildings. I imagined what he would have said, the awe he would have felt.
Then I made my way to Central Park — the heart of the city, and the place Ronnie most wanted to see.
There, under a tall oak tree overlooking the skyline and beside a quiet lake, I found the perfect spot. It was peaceful, shaded, and full of life and motion Ronnie always imagined New York to have.
I scattered his ashes gently beneath that oak tree — keeping my promise and letting him now become a permanent part of the city he absolutely loved but never got a chance to see.
What This Trip Meant
This trip was not about checking something off a list. It was about love. About grief. About memory. It was about making sure that my brother, who never got the life he deserved, still got a piece of the dream he carried with him.
Ronnie may not have made it to New York in life — but now, a part of him will always be there. Beneath the branches of a tree in Central Park. Watching over the city. Part of its heartbeat.
To Ronnie
Ronnie, happy birthday. I love you. I miss you. And I am so glad I kept my promise.
🗽❤️
If you have ever made a trip in memory of someone you have loved, I would be honored to hear your story. Sometimes the most meaningful journeys are not about where we go — but who we take with us.
If Willy Wonka opened a grocery store instead of a chocolate factory, it would look a lot like Jungle Jim’s International Market in Cincinnati, Ohio. This place is not your average grocery store; it is an adventure. From animatronic characters to porta-potty prank bathrooms, Jungle Jim’s is a part food paradise, part roadside attraction, and totally worth the trip.
You are not just shopping for food—it is like going on safari for mystery items in far-off lands. One minute you are grabbing sushi rice, the next you are face-to-face with a dragon fruit or a life-sized Elvis Loin. I came for snacks and left hours later with a cart full of global goodies, imported candy, and stories to tell.
Here is what makes Jungle Jim’s one of the wildest shopping experiences you will ever have:
🍷 The Beer & Wine Section
Imagine a liquor store… then imagine it on steroids. Jungle Jim’s has over 1,200 beers and 15,000 wines from around the world. Belgian ales, Japanese lagers, local Ohio brews, and even meads—all beautifully organized and often available for sampling. The wine section looks like a European cellar, complete with knowledgeable staff ready to help you pick the perfect bottle to go with your cheese (more on that in a second).
🧀 The Cheese Section
This place is cheddar than the rest. Jungle Jim’s boasts over 1,400 types of cheese—yes, you read that right. From creamy French Brie and crumbly English Stilton to sharp Wisconsin cheddar and imported Manchego from Spain, it is a dairy lover’s dream. You can find everything from basic sandwich slices to gourmet wheels worthy of royalty. Bring a cooler. You will thank me later.
🥖 The Bakery
Follow your nose and you will find one of the best-smelling corners of the store. Jungle Jim’s bakery cranks out everything from fresh baguettes and artisan breads to giant cookies and donuts the size of your face. I could not resist a loaf of cinnamon swirl bread and a brownie that could double as a doorstop. It is comfort food with flair.
🌍 The International Section
This is where Jungle Jim’s really earns its “International Market” title. You can literally eat your way around the world without leaving the store. Entire aisles are devoted to different countries and regions—Mexico, India, Japan, Italy, the UK, and more. You will find British biscuits, authentic German spaetzle, Japanese Kit-Kats, and spices you have only seen on travel shows. It is like traveling by taste bud.
🚽 The Famous Bathrooms
Now for one of Jungle Jim’s most talked-about features… the porta-potty bathrooms.
From the outside, they look like standard, plastic, slightly suspicious porta-johns. But when you nervously push open the door, expecting a grimy festival toilet, you are met with beautifully tiled, fully functional, spotless restrooms. It is a prank—and people fall for it every time.
I saw folks standing outside waiting in line, unsure if they were supposed to actually use them. Some peeked inside and stepped back in confusion. Others took photos and laughed aloud. It is part bathroom, part art installation, and unforgettable.
🥭 The Wild Produce Section
This is not your average fruit stand. Jungle Jim’s produce section features exotic offerings from all over the world—dragon fruit, jackfruit, lychee, rambutan, cactus pears, and more. I saw at least five fruits I could not pronounce and three I had never seen before in my life. They even have a full wall dedicated to hot peppers and a citrus section that will blow your mind.
🤖 The Animatronics and Props
You will know this is no ordinary grocery store the moment you see a giant singing Elvis gorilla next to the American food aisle. Jungle Jim’s is full of animatronic characters, themed props, and random surprises—like a real fire truck hanging overhead or a talking soup can in the canned goods aisle. The produce section features a band of singing corn. It is weird. It is wild. It is wonderful.
🛒 Final Thoughts
Jungle Jim’s is not just a place to pick up groceries. It is a destination, an experience, and a story you will be telling people about for years. Whether you are a foodie looking for rare finds, a curious traveler on a day trip, or just someone who wants to take a selfie in a porta-potty bathroom, Jungle Jim’s delivers.
So go ahead—take the trip. plan your own Safari You will leave with a full cart, a full belly, and a big smile.
I am taking my very first Alaskan cruise next year and let me tell you—I have been diving deep into research. From seasoned cruisers to local Alaskans, I have gathered all the packing wisdom I could find to make sure I am ready for the adventure of a lifetime.
This guide is not from a cruise pro yet, but it is built from the best tips, real experiences, and a whole lot of excitement. So, if you are heading to Alaska like me, here is what to pack—and what to leave at home.
✅ MUST-HAVES
🧥 Layers, Layers, Layers
The weather changes quickly in Alaska—even in summer. One minute it’s sunny and 65°F, the next you are caught in a chilly drizzle.
Base layer: Moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirts Middle layer: Fleece or sweater for warmth Outer layer: Waterproof, windproof jacket (hooded is best)
👖 Comfortable Pants
Jeans or hiking pants are perfect for excursions. Avoid shorts unless you run hot; even in July it is cool on the water.
👟 Waterproof Footwear
Whether you are walking on a glacier, exploring Ketchikan, or just facing wet sidewalks, waterproof shoes or boots are key.
🧢 Hats, Gloves, and Scarves
It can be surprisingly cold, especially near glaciers or on open decks. Pack:
Warm hat or beanie Light gloves (consider touchscreen ones for photos) Buff or scarf for wind protection.
🌧️ Compact Umbrella or Rain Poncho
Alaska’s weather can turn wet quickly. Pack something light and easy to carry.
🕶️ Sunglasses & Sunscreen
You might not expect it, but the sun reflects off the water and ice like crazy. Do not forget to protect your eyes and skin.
📸 Binoculars & Camera
Spotting whales, bald eagles, or bears is part of the thrill. A good zoom lens or compact binoculars can make a big difference.
🎒 Daypack
For excursions, pack a small backpack to hold water, snacks, extra layers, and your camera gear.
⚓ Cruise Casuals
Dinner on the ship can be casual or upscale. Bring:
A couple of “nicer” outfits for dinner (button-down or blouse, slacks, or a dress) Comfortable cruise lounge wear for sea days
🚫 DON’T BOTHER
👙 Swimsuits (Maybe Just One)
Most cruise ships have hot tubs, but you will not be sunbathing. Bring one if you are into hot tubbing; otherwise skip it.
👠 High Heels or Fancy Shoes
Save the suitcase space. Between the movement of the ship and the rugged ports, comfort wins.
🏖️ Beach Towels
Your ship will provide them—and you likely will not use them off the ship anyway.
🧴 Too Many Toiletries
Unless you need specific brands, the cruise ship will have the basics. Travel-sized everything is the way to go.
🧳 Heavy Suitcases
Alaska is not the place to overpack. You will regret lugging around an extra 20 pounds. Focus on re-wearable layers.
📚 A Stack of Books
Bring one or download them to a Kindle or tablet. You will be out and about exploring or watching the scenery—less time than you think to read!
Bonus Tip: Pack for Port Adventures
If you have booked a dog sledding, kayaking, or glacier hike excursion—check if they provide gear like boots or parkas. Some do, which saves space!
While this packing list is based on research and advice from experienced cruisers, I will be putting it all to the test on my Alaskan cruise next year—and I will be sure to report back with what worked (and what did not)!
Have you been on an Alaskan cruise? I would love to hear your packing tips too. And if you are enjoying this kind of content, please subscribe to “Take the Trip by Brian”—I genuinely appreciate every single follower and cannot wait to keep sharing the journey with you.
If you are a fan of castles, medieval history, or just quirky roadside attractions, then boy, do I have the perfect Ohio adventure for you? Just northeast of Cincinnati, nestled along the banks of the Little Miami River, sits Château Laroche—but locals and road-trippers alike know it best as Loveland Castle.
Yep, a real castle. In Ohio. Built by hand.
🏰 Built by One Man with a Dream (and a Lot of Bricks)
Loveland Castle is not just cool to look at, it is a testament to one man’s unbelievable dedication. Sir Harry Andrews, a WWI vet and medieval enthusiast, started building the castle in 1929… and did not stop for over 50 years. Using stones from the river and homemade bricks (yes, homemade bricks!), he recreated a medieval-style fortress complete with towers, turrets, a dungeon, and even a knight’s hall.
And no, this is not some Disney-fied tourist trap. This is the real deal. Stone walls. Gothic arches. Armor. Swords. A garden fit for royalty. The place is equal parts storybook and spooky.
👑 Touring the Castle
We stepped into the castle and instantly felt transported. Inside, you will find winding staircases, medieval weapons, stained glass, and relics from Sir Harry’s time in Europe and the war. There is also an impressive collection of medieval history books and displays about knighthoods and chivalry.
Outside, the grounds are serene and lush, with plenty of places to sit, take photos, and let your imagination wander. We were practically expecting a knight to come riding up on horseback.
One of the coolest parts? The Knights of the Golden Trail, the group Harry founded, still maintains the castle today. They are real people keeping the legacy alive dressed in chainmail and all.
🧭 Know Before You Go
Address: 12025 Shore Rd, Loveland, OH 45140 Admission: Just a few bucks i think $5.00 on my visit (cash only!), and totally worth it. Hours:If you are visitingOperating hours are

🏞️ Bonus: Make It a Day Trip
After the castle, we grabbed lunch in downtown Loveland—super charming with a small-town vibe and great local eats. You can also bike or hike the nearby Little Miami Scenic Trail if you are feeling active. Or just hang by the river with an iced coffee and take in the views.
⚔️ Final Thoughts
Loveland Castle is one of those hidden Ohio gems that makes you stop and say, “Wait, what? There is a castle here?” But it is more than just a fun stop, it’s a symbol of passion, persistence, and the magic of chasing a dream.
Sir Harry did not just build a castle. He built a legacy.
And now it is your turn to take the trip.

Every now and then, you find a place that doesn’t just serve great food — it serves good vibes, too. That was exactly our experience today at Pickles and Bones BBQ in Milford, Ohio. With its bright exterior, welcoming charm, and the irresistible scent of slow-smoked meats drifting out the door, this little BBQ joint made a big impression.
From the moment we walked in, we were greeted like old friends. Renee, who runs the front of house with a warm smile and an even warmer heart, shared the story of how Pickles and Bones got started. It began as a humble food truck — just a dream on wheels — and grew into the cheerful brick-and-mortar spot it is today. At first, it served breakfast and lunch, but since breakfast crowds mostly came on weekends, the team decided to go all in on what they truly excel at: BBQ. And thank goodness they did.
You can taste the passion in every bite. And you can hear it in Renee’s voice when she talks — with unmistakable pride — about how far they’ve come. This isn’t just a business; it’s a labor of love.
Now, let’s talk food.
I ordered the Brisket Reuben, minus the sauerkraut (I know — a German who doesn’t like sauerkraut… I’m a walking contradiction). Instead, I added a side of their creamy coleslaw, which brought just the right crunch and tang. That brisket? Unreal. Smoky, tender, and melt-in-your-mouth good. Layered on marble rye, it hit every note of comfort, flavor, and satisfaction.
Each sandwich comes with two sides, and I didn’t hold back. I picked the hoe cakes — think cornbread and pancake had a delicious baby — served with sweet, rich sorghum butter that melted in all the right ways. My second side, the cheesy potato casserole, was everything you dream of in comfort food: gooey, golden, and outrageously good.
Now here’s where it gets funny — my wife pulled a classic move and copied my order… well, most of it. She duplicated the Brisket Reuben minus the kraut and the cheesy potatoes without hesitation. But she took her own path with the second side and went for the macaroni salad — creamy, cool, and perfectly seasoned. So technically not a total copycat… but let’s just say inspiration was heavily borrowed. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but in this case, it was also the smartest lunchtime decision of the day.
Another standout? The house-brined pickles that come with every meal. But these aren’t your average deli pickles. Pickles and Bones adds jalapeños to the mix, giving them a bright vinegar kick that’s slightly sweet but not spicy — just a perfect, tangy crunch that balances out the richness of the BBQ.
We both had iced tea with our meals — mine was a half-and-half with lemonade, which hit the spot and paired perfectly with the smoky, savory flavors of the meal.
Just when we thought our experience couldn’t get any better, the staff surprised us with a complimentary dessert to welcome us on our first visit — a cup of banana pudding. Light, creamy, and packed with nostalgic flavor, it was the perfect exclamation point to end a fantastic meal.
But what truly makes Pickles and Bones special is the people. The staff greeted customers by name, checked in often with genuine smiles, and made everyone feel like family coming over for Sunday dinner. That kind of warmth isn’t something you can fake — it’s the real secret ingredient that makes this place shine.
We left full, happy, and beyond satisfied with our pick for lunch — and already talking about making a return visit.
So if you’re ever in the Milford area — or even if you’re not — make the effort.
Take the trip to Pickles and Bones BBQ. Your taste buds (and your heart) will be glad you did.
Today’s lunch turned into a full-blown Tex-Mex fiesta at Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant, and let me tell you—this wasn’t just any midday meal. This was bold flavor, bright colors, and enough creamy jalapeño dip to make you rethink your life priorities (in the best way).
We kicked things off like true Chuy’s veterans—with those signature thin, salty chips and fresh salsa. But we didn’t stop there. We asked for the legendary creamy jalapeño dip, or as I now officially call it:
“¡Es delicioso!”
It’s creamy, tangy, a little spicy, and completely addictive. Honestly, if they sold it by the gallon, I’d find room in the fridge. No hesitation.
I ordered the Pancho’s Nachos—minus the jalapeños (because I like to control my spice levels). Each chip came fully loaded—no sad, dry chips here. They were stacked with beans, cheese, seasoned meat, and a whole lot of happiness.
My wife went with the soft tacos, a simple but always satisfying choice. Fresh tortillas, flavorful filling, and a nod of approval mid-bite that said it all.
Between bites and chip breaks, we soaked in the atmosphere. Chuy’s isn’t just a place to eat—it’s a vibe. Bright decor, Elvis shrines, funky artwork, and a staff that makes you feel like family. It’s colorful, it’s casual, and it’s got flavor in every corner.
Final Takeaway:
🌶️ Spice level: adjustable and awesome
🧀 Cheese factor: high and glorious
💃 Vibe: festive, funky, and full of life
🇲🇽 Overall verdict: ¡Es delicioso!
