Yesterday, we took a day trip to Chillicothe, the former Capital of Ohio. to explore the downtown shopping scene and grab some tasty food—and we were not disappointed.
One of our first stops was Grandpa Joe’s Candy Shop, and it was like stepping into a time machine. This place is packed with nostalgic treats—candies we have not seen since we were kids—and an incredible variety of flavored sodas that will make your head spin (in a good way). If you ever find yourself in Chillicothe, make sure to swing by. It is a fun experience for all ages.

After the sugar rush, we wandered around the charming downtown area, checking out local shops and enjoying the small-town atmosphere. We did not ride it this time, but they even have a free trolley that tours you around and shares the history of Ohio’s first capital city. Definitely planning to hop on that next time!

We wrapped up our visit with dinner at the Old Canal Smokehouse and let me tell you—it was the highlight of the trip.
We started off with cream cheese-stuffed mushrooms, breaded and served with a tangy mustard horseradish sauce. Rich, creamy, and with a perfect crunch, they set the tone for a memorable meal.

For the main course, I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was tender, smoky, and juicy—everything you want in BBQ. I paired it with sour cream potato salad (tasty, though just a bit dry for my liking), and the real surprise of the meal: coconut onion rings. Yes, you read that right—coconut! These had just a hint of sweetness and a perfectly crispy coating. Pro tip: they are on the appetizer menu, but you can upgrade and get them as a side (worth the upcharge). I Added a piece of cornbread, and I was in heaven.

My wife went with the beef brisket sandwich, coleslaw, pickles, the same potato salad, and cornbread. She declared it the best brisket she has ever had—and I don’t take her BBQ praise lightly!

Overall, this was some of the best BBQ we have ever had. Old Canal Smokehouse is a gem, and we will definitely be coming back for more.

So, if you are ever in southern Ohio, Take the Trip to Chillicothe. Stroll the historic streets, satisfy your sweet tooth at Grandpa Joe’s, and treat yourself to a mouthwatering meal at Old Canal Smokehouse. You will not regret it.
