One of the most underrated parts of travel happens before you ever lock the front door. You can have the perfect itinerary, packed bags, and snacks for the road—but if your house isn’t prepped, it’ll live rent-free in your head the entire trip.
I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) that a little prep at home goes a long way toward enjoying your vacation. Here’s how I get my house ready before I take off, so I can focus on the trip instead of worrying about what I forgot.
Clean Just Enough
I’m not doing a deep spring clean before vacation—but I am doing the basics. Dishes washed, trash taken out, and laundry handled. There’s nothing worse than coming home tired and being greeted by a sink full of dishes and that mystery smell you can’t place.
Bonus tip: clean the fridge just enough to get rid of anything that might turn into a science experiment while you’re gone.
Unplug and Power Down
Before leaving, I do a quick walk-through and unplug things that don’t need to be on—coffee makers, toaster ovens, chargers, and anything else that’s just sitting there drawing power. It’s not just about saving a few bucks on electricity; it’s peace of mind.
I also double-check that lights are off… except the ones I want on.
Make It Look Like Someone’s Home
An empty house screams “nobody’s here,” and I try to avoid that. Timers are your best friend—set a lamp or two to turn on in the evening. If you’re gone for more than a couple of days, pause mail delivery or have a neighbor grab it so it doesn’t pile up.
If I’m feeling extra responsible, I let a trusted neighbor know I’ll be gone. Just in case.
Secure the Important Stuff
Doors and windows get locked (twice, because of course). I make sure garage doors are fully closed and any outdoor equipment is secured. If you’ve got cameras or a security system, double-check everything is armed and working before you leave.
It takes five minutes—and saves a lot of stress.
Prep for Your Return
This is the part I didn’t used to do, but now I swear by it. I make sure the bed is made with clean sheets, there’s at least something edible in the freezer, and the house is in “welcome home” mode.
Coming back from vacation is hard enough. Walking into a comfortable, calm house makes it a little easier.
Final Walk-Through
Right before heading out, I do one last slow lap around the house. Thermostat adjusted, faucets checked, trash out, doors locked. It sounds simple, but that final walk-through is what lets me leave without second-guessing myself halfway down the road.
Brian’s Tip
Take a quick photo of your stove, doors, and thermostat before you leave. If that “Did I turn it off?” panic hits mid-trip, you’ll have proof—and can go right back to enjoying where you are.
Because once the house is handled, the trip can truly begin.
